About J-Kicks Taekwondo
1. WT Taekwondo: The Olympic Athlete
-
Origin: South Korea (Seoul, 1973)
-
The Spirit: Speed, Agility, and Innovation.
-
The Style: Formed to modernize Taekwondo into a global sport, WT is the "art of the foot." It is a high-speed, Olympic discipline that focuses on lightning-fast aerial kicks and fluid, "bouncy" movement.
-
Best for: Those who want world-class kicking skills and a high-cardio, competitive environment.
2. ITF Taekwondo: The Traditionalist
-
Origin: Korea to North Korea (Military Roots, 1966)
-
The Spirit: Power, Balance, and Heritage.
-
The Style: Founded by General Choi Hong Hi for the Korean military, ITF stays true to the art’s original combat roots. It uses a "Sine Wave" movement (an up-and-down motion) to drop body weight into strikes, treating hands and feet with equal importance.
-
Best for: Students seeking a balanced martial art that combines traditional philosophy with practical "kickboxing" utility.
3. Karate: The Grounded Mountain
-
Origin: Okinawa & Japan (Ancient roots, popularized early 1900s)
-
The Spirit: Precision, Stability, and Discipline.
-
The Style: While Taekwondo "flies," Karate "roots." It utilizes deep, stable stances and direct, explosive hand strikes. It is a linear art designed for maximum impact over the shortest distance possible.
-
Best for: Those who value structure, total-body striking (punches, elbows, and knees), and a "one-strike" mindset.
The Differences
Kukkiwon
The Kukkiwon, located in Seoul, South Korea, is the official World Taekwondo Headquarters and the global governing body for Taekwondo, established in 1972. It standardizes Taekwondo techniques, promotes the martial art globally, and is the sole authority for issuing black belt (Dan) certifications.
World Taekwondo (WT), formerly the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), is the official international governing body for Taekwondo and Para-taekwondo, headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. Founded in 1973, it is recognized by the IOC and responsible for managing Taekwondo as an Olympic sport, characterized by its modern, competitive, and full-contact, "sport-oriented" sparring style.
